Family of Mattye and Ollie Sisk
Mary Sue Lymberopoulos, and Sandra Sisk Smith, the children of Mattye and Ollie Sisk initiated this fund in the summer of 2015. This memorial scholarship is designated for Alvord ISD, TX students.
Ollie Sisk was originally born in Sunset, Texas in 1915. He attended a one-room schoolhouse in Nickleville just outside of Alvord, Texas where his family was tenant farmers and he learned to pick cotton. After graduating high school in Sunset, Texas he enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corp and later joined the Unites States Army Air Corp earning the rank of Captain. Mattye Sutherland was born in Holliday Texas and grew up in Archer City Texas in a family of twelve siblings. Mattye worked at the local hospital assisting the doctor while she attended high school from the age of 14 to 18. Mattye was taught the importance of education and after graduating Archer City High School, she attended Arlington College and went to work for the U.S. Government in Washington D.C. Ollie and Mattye married and moved to Alvord, Texas in 1947 where they raised 5 children that all attended Alvord schools: Kaye, Linda, Sandra, Bill and Sue. Ollie and Mattye had many great adventures together, including purchasing the Alvord Drugstore, and Ollie later went on to be Mayor of Alvord. Ollie and Mattye didn’t let lack of money stop them from any idea or dream. If possible, they would give it a try and go for it. Ollie passed away from cancer in 1977. Mattye later went back to college at Midwestern State University and obtained her degree in education at the age of 58, and began teaching at Alvord Elementary School. Mattye Sutherland Sisk Pennington passed away in November 2002 at the age of 80. She was an inspiration to many.
